Saturday evening during Walks at 8:00 pm
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Heart of Carolina Emmaus Community:
At the last Board meeting, the HOC Board made the difficult decision to cancel all Emmaus walks previously scheduled for 2015. In the past two years, we have struggled to reach the required minimum number of pilgrims for each walk. In addition, we have had decreasing attendance at Gatherings, and were not even able to find enough people interested in leading the community as Board members to have a complete ballot for 2015. Through prayer and holy conversation with each other, we have discerned a need to step back and take a year to determine the future of the Heart of Carolina Community.
At this point, the Chrysalis Flight in January 2015 is still scheduled. The deadline for applications is November 21st and a decision will be made at that time as to whether or not it will be held based on the minimum number of caterpillars required to continue.
In the midst of these difficult discussions, we continue to celebrate the work of Christ among us that, for many, was begun on a Walk to Emmaus. We have many Lay Leaders and Clergy in our churches who are answering God’s call and living out their fourth day in amazing ways. We praise God for the transformed lives in our midst because of this wonderful ministry.
But, as the Kingdom of God moves forward, ministries begin and ministries end. Just as the early apostles were often suddenly shifted from one geographic location to another because of the Spirit’s leading, so we must always be ready to shift and change for the sake of the Kingdom. We are blessed to have witnessed that Spirit in action as the leadership of this community has made the decision to pause, reflect, listen, and move forward as God wills.
During the next year, the current board members will continue, honoring their three year commitment. We will be seeking input from the Upper Room, from clergy leadership including Bishop Ward, and from all interested members of the community. Please feel free to ask questions, to share thoughts and ideas, and to reflect with us. We ask for your prayers. We know that this is sad news for many of you, but we encourage you to remember that this ministry belongs to Christ, and that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28). With this assurance we move boldly, even joyfully, into God’s good plan for the future, whatever it may hold.
